Admission Policies

The following links are for applicants and new students to have a better understanding of admissions policies and expectations here at the Graduate School. All policies refer to our online catalog, which will further explain the specific policy in detail.

General Criteria & Standards

These policies address the general requirements and criteria required for admission to the Graduate School at UMBC.

Categories of Admission

Applicants may be offered admission to the Graduate School in any number of programs including full degree-seeking status, post-baccalaureate programs, or non-degree programs.

Admission Provisions

Provisions may be placed on a student’s account at the beginning of their career and must be fulfilled before the end of the first semester. Registration holds can be incurred if provisions are not completed.

Professional Studies

The Division of Professional Studies (DPS) offers many credit and non-credit courses for professionals interested in skill and professional development. Visit DPS for more policies regarding continuing education programs.

Accelerated Program

This program enables a current UMBC undergraduate student to double count credit hours towards both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

60+ Golden ID Program

This program permits Maryland residents who are at least 60 years young to enroll in graduate courses at little cost. Some fees are still included in this program.

English Language Institute & Conditional Admission

International applicants that do not meet the minimum English-proficiency requirement have the opportunity to enroll in English courses through the ELI to potentially become eligible for conditional admission to the Graduate School.

International Admissions

Applicants are encouraged to pay attention to all international-specific requirements, including earlier application deadlines and immigration documents.
